It involves a gentle hovering or touch of the healer’s hands on the receiver’s body.

In the spirit of sharing, we asked a group of women what their first reiki experiences were like.

This is what they said:

Anne Marie, content editor.

“My first experience was terrible.

My shoulder was hurting from some overzealous stretching and a co-worker offered to do reiki on it.

Instead of helping though, it made it hurt more.

I felt the energy, but didn’t feel the healing.

It was as relaxing as getting a massage.”

Elizabeth, social media manager.

Emma, associate editor.

“I tried reiki for the first time for a story and really didnt know what to expect.

Rosemary, yoga teacher.

“So my first reiki experience was when I was in college.

My stepmom took me to an energy healer because I was working through a lot of stuff.

My teacher Kate Posch led a summer seasonal workshop, and the experience was a lot more profound.

Rebecca Stump, senior brand experience manager.

I came out of it not really knowing where I was and feeling incredibly relaxed and at ease.”

Kelsey Patel, reiki master.

Lying down and receiving a reiki treatment was very foreign to me.

I walked out of my first session feeling lighter and that my back pain had dissipated.

I was not sure at all what had just happened, but I knew I felt better.
